About this forecast
The Federal Railroad Administration seeks to demonstrate a prototype real-time bridge condition and rating system designed to enhance railroad bridge inspection and safety assessment capabilities across the nation's tens of thousands of railroad bridges. The demonstration project will leverage advances in sensor design, edge computing, and machine learning technologies to improve the accuracy and timeliness of bridge condition assessments and load ratings in compliance with 49 CFR Part 237 requirements. The solicitation is estimated to be released on January 15, 2026.
This new requirement carries an estimated award value between $1,000,000 and $1,900,000 and will be awarded on a firm fixed-price basis to a non-competitively selected contractor. The demonstration will involve testing the prototype technology on a varied set of in-service railroad bridges to advance the state of the art in bridge inspection technology. Interested parties should contact Matthew Carr at the Department of Transportation (matthew.carr@dot.gov or +1-202-738-8619) for additional information.
Forecast text
The U.S. railroad network includes tens of thousands of bridges. Each individual railroad in the nation is responsible for ensuring the safety of these bridges per the Federal regulations contained in 49 CFR Part 237. The Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) Office of Railroad Safety is tasked with ensuring compliance with these regulations and, in parallel, the Office of Research and Development is tasked with advancing the state of knowledge and technology regarding railroad bridge inspection technology, inspection techniques, and data management. With recent advances in sensor design, edge computing, and machine learning technologies there is an opportunity to improve the accuracy and timeliness of railroad bridge condition assessments and load ratings. The demonstration of this new prototype technology on a varied set of in-service bridges will advance the state of the art in the bridge inspection industry.
