About this forecast

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) NESDIS CDP intends to procure a microwave sounder (MWS) pilot study to assess the quality and impact of commercial microwave sounder observations. The project aims to investigate the utility of MWS products developed by commercial vendors and evaluate the potential benefits of adding multiple microwave sounding orbits to the current government backbone. The estimated solicitation release date is February 14, 2026, with an anticipated contract award date of May 14, 2026.

The forecasted contract has an estimated award value range between $501,000 and $1,000,000, categorized under NAICS code 518210 for Computing Infrastructure Providers, Data Processing, Web Hosting, and Related Services. The place of performance will be located in Silver Spring, Maryland, with Cherron Bennett-Pettus serving as the primary contract specialist and can be reached at cherron.bennett-pettus@noaa.gov or +1 (301) 628-1386. The contract is anticipated to be awarded as a competitive, open market purchase order through the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Services (NESDIS) office.

Forecast text

The NOAA NESDIS CDP intends to continue to assess the quality and impact of available commercial microwave sounder observations for the determination of MWS characteristics in a follow-on pilot to the first MWS pilot. NOAA will continue to use Pilot Study data to investigate the utility of MWS products developed by commercial vendors while also addressing the potential benefits of adding multiple MW sounding orbits (vis-a-vis commercial MWS supplemental missions) over the current Government backbone to show improved benefits to NWP as a saturation of these MW observations has not been observed.
