About this forecast

The Department of Health and Human Services Food and Drug Administration is seeking to procure an Eddy Jet 2W Spiral Plater and Sphere Flash Automated Colony Counter to support research on Vibrio and Campylobacter species in shellfish. The primary objective is to develop more efficient culture and isolation methods that reduce media and consumable usage by up to two-thirds while improving research accuracy and reducing human error. The estimated solicitation release date is April 1, 2026, with an anticipated contract award date of June 1, 2026.

The contract falls under the Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing NAICS code 334516, and the primary point of contact is Laquia Geathers (laquia.geathers@fda.hhs.gov) from the Food and Drug Administration. The procurement aims to leverage technology that can generate consistent, high-quality digital images of bacterial plates, enabling objective colony phenotype data collection. While specific award values are not disclosed, the contract represents a strategic investment in improving laboratory research efficiency and accuracy for microbiological testing methodologies.

Forecast text

Eddy Jet 2W Spiral Plater and Sphere Flash Automated Colony Counter Both the Vibrio and Campylobacter groups are evaluating recovery of a range of differential and selective agars in order to develop culture and isolation methods for emerging Vibrio species and thermotolerant Campylobacter in shellfish using plate counts. Plate counts require a significant amount of time, media, and consumables. The use of the spiral plater and colony counter will reduce the amount of required media and consumables to 1/3 of the original burden, resulting in cost and time savings over the long term. Additionally, the spiral plater and counter will improve variability due to human error, resulting in greater efficiency and fewer required replicates for appropriate statistical power. Lastly, the SphereFlash colony counter can save consistent, high quality digital images of the plates, which allows the team to collect objective colony phenotype data. HFP Priority #504
