About this opportunity

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), operating under the Department of the Interior's Office of Acquisitions and Grants, has issued a Sources Sought Special Notice for an X-Ray Fluorescence Core Scanner. This announcement is not a formal request for proposals or quotes but rather a market research initiative to identify qualified vendors capable of supplying the specified equipment. The notice applies to businesses classified under NAICS code 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing) with a size standard of 1,000 employees, and it is open to all responsible sources regardless of set-aside status. Interested parties should note that this is purely exploratory research to inform the government's acquisition strategy, and no contracts or purchase orders are committed at this stage.

Vendors wishing to respond must submit a capabilities statement demonstrating their ability to meet the statement of work requirements by Monday, January 26, 2026, at 10:00 AM EST via email to eadam@usgs.gov. The scanner must meet specific technical specifications, including the capacity to analyze both marine sediment and mineral cores in wet or dry conditions, detect elements from magnesium through uranium with high precision, and process samples up to 1.5 meters in length at 1 millimeter resolution or better. Additional requirements include appropriate X-ray safety shielding, energy resolution of 3% or better, and integration with an RGB camera for paired imaging during scanning. The government will not reimburse any costs associated with preparing and submitting response materials to this Sources Sought announcement.
