About this opportunity

NASA's Kennedy Space Center published a sole source justification notice for the Utah Reusable Root Module (URRM), a specialized flight-ready, reusable space crop rooting module designed to integrate with NASA's Ohalo III test rig for growing crops on the International Space Station. The contract was awarded to Utah State University for an estimated value of $1.4 million with a performance period from April 1, 2025, through October 9, 2026. NASA justified the sole source award under FAR 6.302-1 because Utah State University developed unique proprietary processes, specialized skills, and exclusive knowledge for this technology through previous competitively awarded NASA research grants, including specialized solutions for water distribution, microgravity plant growth, and maintaining oxygen content in root zones that cannot be duplicated by other vendors. The URRM technology optimizes reusable peat growth media for multiple plant growth cycles and serves as a demonstration for continuous crop production in space. The contract requires Utah State University to complete the final design, documentation, fabrication, and delivery of the flight-ready URRM hardware that will support NASA's space agriculture research initiatives.
