About this opportunity
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is issuing a Special Notice stating its intent to award detrital zircon U/Pb, Hf, and T/REE analyses sole-source to the University of Arizona LaserChron Lab, unless a vendor responds with an affirmative answer by 1:00 PM EDT, Wednesday, November 4, 2026. No set-aside is used. The Geology, Energy, and Minerals Science Center (GEMSC) and Florence Bascom Geoscience Center (FBGC) in Reston, Virginia require the analyses on rock and modern sediment samples for projects including the Gulf of Mexico Petroleum Systems Project and Alaska Petroleum Systems Project. Vendors with similar technical expertise who can provide the same services must contact Contract Specialist Miranda Blankenship at Miranda_blankenship@ios.doi.gov. The attached Statement of Work calls for single-shot laser ablation analysis of 100 to 300 zircons per sample, with capacity for 600 or more on request, delivered as U-Pb and Pb-Pb ages, isotope ratios, uncertainties, signal intensity data, and annotated back-scatter electron maps in Excel format. Performance may not exceed one year, with timeframes set within one to three months of order placement. Personnel must hold a minimum M.S. in analytical geochemistry with continental tectonics expertise. The sole-source justification cites Arizona LaserChron's NSF National Facility designation, its in-house data reduction protocols, and USGS use of the lab for U-Pb dating from 2021 through 2026.
Notice text
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geology, Energy, and Minerals Science Center (GEMSC), and Florence Bascom Geoscience Center (FBGC) in Reston, VA requires detrital zircon U/Pb, Hf, and T/REE analyses for rock and modern sediment samples. Samples will support scientific work across multiple projects, including, but not limited to, the Gulf of Mexico Petroleum Systems Project and the Alaska Petroleum Systems Project.
The USGS is aware of no other source that can provide the above. Therefore, it intends to make an award to the University of Arizona LaserChron Lab unless it is contacted by any vendor who believes they have similar technical expertise and can provide the same service(s). Vendors are invited to contact the Contract Specialist, Miranda Blankenship, via email at Miranda_blankenship@ios.doi.gov no later than 1:00 PM EDT, Wednesday, November 4, 2026, with an affirmative answer.
