About this opportunity

The Air Force Academy issued a notice of intent to sole-source eight rotary evaporators to Heidolph (Wood Dale, Illinois) by July 23, 2026 at 10:00 AM MDT, with responses limited to capability statements from alternative sources claiming equivalence to the salient characteristics.

The Academy's Department of Chemistry requires rotary evaporators with a heating bath capable of reaching 200 degrees Celsius or greater, vertical condenser, manual hand-lift adjustments, speed range exceeding 280 rpm, and 115 V rated voltage. Market research determined Heidolph is the sole manufacturer meeting the critical 200-degree minimum heating requirement; alternative commercial products failed this threshold. Procurement from other sources would impose markups of 130 to 180 percent over manufacturer open-market pricing.

The procurement will proceed as a firm-fixed-price commercial contract under FAR Part 12 simplified acquisition procedures. PSC 6640 (Laboratory Equipment and Supplies) and NAICS 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing, 1,000-employee size standard) apply. This notice is informational; no competitive solicitation will be posted, and no separate Justification and Approval document will be published because the requirement falls below the Simplified Acquisition Threshold. Responsible sources may challenge the sole-source determination by submitting a capability statement demonstrating equivalent performance against all stated characteristics by the July 23 deadline.
