About this opportunity
The United States Mint (USM), part of the Department of the Treasury, has issued a Special Notice requesting information from potential suppliers of process chemicals used in the production of U.S. circulating coins. The USM currently employs various chemicals to clean, protect, and lubricate metal blanks during the coin stamping process, and seeks to identify alternate suppliers of these chemicals.
The purpose of this Request for Information (RFI) is to find suppliers that can provide the required process chemicals using readily available, non-proprietary components and processes. The USM is seeking chemicals that offer superior cleaning and surface preparation, easy rinsing with no residue, compatibility with production volumes, water solubility, and compliance with environmental regulations. Interested parties have until July 19, 2024 to respond to the RFI, which includes detailed specifications for the composition, weight, diameter, and thickness of U.S. circulating coins. The USM is not setting any specific eligibility criteria, but is looking for suppliers with the ability to produce large quantities of the required chemicals at multiple locations and maintain at least 1-year shelf life.
Notice text
The United States Mint (USM) uses multiple process chemicals to clean, protect, and lubricate blanks during preparation and stamping processes. The USM wishes to find alternate suppliers of the current chemicals in use. Fulfilling this objective will require in-depth knowledge of cleaning compounds, corrosion protection, and lubrication for metals and the ability for small-scale and large-scale formulation and testing.
The attached describes the current state of USM coin production as it relates to the chemical treatment of blanks and their use in the stamping process as well as a listing of the chemicals of interest. Also provided is a list of requirements desired by the USM and specifications for circulating coins (except for the penny which is provided to the USM as a ready to strike blank).
