About this opportunity

The United States Mint (USM) has issued a Special Notice requesting information on the development of an alternate chemical solution to protect and lubricate coin blanks during the stamping process. The current proprietary chemical compound used by the USM is at risk of reduced or ceased production, which would significantly impact their operations. This Special Notice is published by the Department of the Treasury.

The purpose of this Request for Information (RFI) is for the USM to explore the feasibility of developing a similar or better performing alternative to the current proprietary chemical compound. The USM is seeking a solution that can provide superior corrosion protection, lubrication for stamping, compatibility with all circulating coin alloys, water solubility, and the ability to be produced in large quantities from readily available, non-proprietary components. The proposed solution must be able to be applied during inline operations to millions of metal blanks per day and have a shelf life of at least one year. Additionally, the solution must allow for safe storage and handling, and comply with applicable environmental regulations. The USM is inviting interested parties to submit information by the due date of July 19, 2024.

Notice text

The United States Mint (USM) uses a third-party proprietary compound to protect and lubricate blanks during the coin-stamping process. For any reason, if production of this proprietary compound was reduced or ceased, it would greatly impact the USM operations. The USM wishes to develop a similar or alternate solution that will perform equally or better than the current mixture. Development of an alternate solution will require in-depth knowledge of corrosion protection, lubrication, and self-assembled monolayers, exploration of relevant chemicals and/or processes, as well as small-scale and large-scale formulation and testing. The attached narrative describes the current state of USM coin production as it relates to the chemical treatment of blanks and their use in the stamping process. Also provided is a list of requirements desired by the USM.
