About this opportunity
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is conducting market research to identify vendors capable of supplying two 2.3K mechanical cryocooler systems, with responses due by June 15, 2026. This sources sought announcement precedes formal solicitation; NIST will determine the acquisition method and set-aside strategy after analyzing vendor responses. If at least two qualified small businesses are identified that meet the specifications, the resulting solicitation will be set aside for small business; however, NIST is actively seeking responses from all responsible sources, including large and small businesses, and all small business set-aside categories are under consideration.
Each system must achieve a base temperature of 2.3K or colder with cooling power of 0.1W or greater at 4.2K, comprise a compressor, flexible helium lines (approximately 10 feet), and a coldhead, and be compatible with existing NIST-designed and NIST-assembled cryostats matching the standard dimensions and specifications of a Sumitomo RDK-101DL cryocooler or equivalent. The compressor must be small, powered by 120VAC, and air-cooled. NIST is specifically interested in identifying U.S. manufacturers of these systems.
Phased delivery is acceptable with each system delivered as a complete unit in potentially separate shipments. Government acceptance is expected to take longer than seven days. Installation, training, maintenance, repair, and travel are not applicable; base manufacturer warranty is acceptable. Work is performed at NIST's Physical Measurement Laboratory, Applied Physics Division, Quantum Nanophotonics Group.
