About this opportunity
The Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has published a Special Notice seeking industry partners to collaborate on developing and commercializing a modified shaped-charge technology. This technology involves adding a variable mass component to the cavity liner of shaped charges, which reduces manufacturing costs and enables simpler production processes. The innovation allows a single charge design to provide multiple output options by controlling liner collapse through the variable mass component rather than requiring precision machining of different liners. The opportunity is structured as a technology transfer and commercialization collaboration rather than a traditional procurement contract. LLNL has filed for patent protection on this invention and is actively seeking commercial partners to bring the technology to market.
The primary objective of this Special Notice is to identify industry partners with demonstrated capabilities to commercialize shaped-charge technologies for applications including military uses, oil and gas well perforation, pyrotechnic cutting, and demolition operations. Interested parties must submit responses by October 31, 2025, and should possess proven experience in bringing similar technologies from laboratory development to commercial markets. The technology is currently at a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 3-5, indicating it has moved beyond basic research but requires further development for commercial deployment. LLNL emphasizes that potential partners should have established market presence and the technical expertise necessary to advance this dual-use technology across both defense and commercial sectors. The collaboration opportunity represents part of the laboratory's broader mission to transfer critical technologies from government research facilities to commercial applications.

Summary:
A shaped charge has been modified such that a variable mass component is added to the cavity liner, which decreases cost and enables simpler manufacturing
Opportunity:
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), LLC under contract no. DE-AC52-07NA27344 (Contract 44) with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to enter into a collaboration to further develop and commercialize its Shaped-Charge Modification for Multiple Charge Outputs.
Background:
Precision shaped-charges require tight part tolerances to achieve proper charge function. Precision machining can result in excessive costs and long turnaround times. In particular, machining the cavity liner is the most difficult and time consuming step in the design and fabrication process. There is a need to design liners that are easier to manufacture, faster and less expensive.
Description:
LLNL researchers have developed an approach to manufacture the liner with an added variable mass component, which is used to precisely control and alter the collapse of the liner. This results in a single charge that can provide multiple output options.
Advantages/Benefits:
- Decreased cost
- Iterate charge designs faster
- Tailor charge output to a given target
- Produce multiple types of charge output with the same liner - the liner can remain the same while changing only the variable mass component
- Simplify liner machining while retaining control of liner collapse via the addition of the variable mass component
Potential Applications:
- Military applications
- Oil/shale well perforation
- Pyrotechnic cutting
- High-explosive demolition
Development Status:
Current stage of technology development: TRL ☐ 0-2 ☐ 3-5 ☒ 5-9
