About this opportunity

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), through its Geology, Minerals, Energy, & Geophysics Science Center, is seeking qualified vendors to provide split-stream laser ablation (LASS) zircon petrochronology analysis services for igneous or metamorphic rock samples. The procurement requires sample preparation to obtain zircon mineral separates, imaging and characterization using backscatter electron (BSE) and cathodoluminescence (CL) techniques, and split-stream laser ablation analysis to generate U-Th-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic data. Vendors must demonstrate laboratory capabilities and experience with LASS methods and dual U-Pb/Lu-Hf analyses, provide detailed descriptions of instrumentation and analytical methods, and submit examples of recent relevant work demonstrating quality assurance and quality control procedures. Interested vendors must submit capability statements via email to joel_berberena@ios.doi.gov by April 10, 2026, with submissions including company information, UEI number, SAM registration status, and NAICS 541690 business size classification. This is a Sources Sought Notice issued for information and planning purposes only, and does not constitute a formal solicitation; the government is not obligated to issue a solicitation or award a contract and will not reimburse response costs.

This pre-solicitation notice contains no set-aside designation and does not identify any incumbent contractors or current vendors. The procurement covers approximately three rock samples requiring a minimum of 50 analyses per sample, with the contractor responsible for all analyses at its own facility while the USGS provides intact rock samples in a single shipment. No specific award value or budget range is disclosed in this notice. Deliverables include raw analytical data, interpreted results, data in spreadsheet format, mineral separates, and unprocessed leftover rock to be shipped back to USGS. The applicable NAICS code is 541690 (Other Scientific and Technical Consulting Services) with a size standard of $19.0 million, and the Product Service Code is B504 (Special Studies/Analysis Chemical/Biological).
