About this opportunity
The Army Contracting Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground is conducting a sources sought to identify vendors capable of supplying rare earth magnets for Brushless Direct Current motors used in small uncrewed aircraft systems, with responses due by October 28, 2026.
The requirement specifies Neodymium (NdFeB) magnets in Grade N52SH (preferred) or Grade N42SH (acceptable), with triple-layer Nickel-Copper-Nickel plating and radial magnetization in alternating polarity configurations. Three magnet sizes are required, each with 14 pieces per motor: 34.5 mm outer diameter and 15.0 mm height for the 3115 BLDC motor; 30.9 mm outer diameter and 7.0 mm height for the 2807 BLDC motor; and 26.4 mm outer diameter and 7.0 mm height for the 2407 BLDC motor. All magnets must meet exact specifications for Residual Induction, Coercive Force, Intrinsic Coercivity, and Max Energy Product with zero tolerance for substandard materials or structural defects.
Respondents must demonstrate supply chain transparency documenting mine-to-magnet chain of custody, identify geographic locations of mining, smelting, and magnetizing facilities, detail maximum manufacturing throughput and surge capacity, confirm ability to supply both material grades and scale production for custom variations, and describe internal testing capabilities for magnetic properties, plating adhesion, and geometric tolerances. The Government anticipates multiple awards and will consider all small business set-aside categories during procurement strategy development. Responses must be submitted electronically in Adobe PDF or Microsoft Word format, minimum 10-point font, limited to ten pages in bullet-point style.
