About this opportunity

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), under the Department of Energy, is conducting a Request for Information (RFI) to identify small-scale current energy devices suitable for powering coastal aquaculture operations. The agency seeks information from developers, owners, and manufacturers of current energy converters with specific technical parameters, including devices with a diameter less than 3 meters capable of generating electricity in currents slower than 3 m/s. The RFI aims to explore the feasibility of co-locating marine energy technologies with aquaculture systems, focusing on potential electricity generation for supporting equipment like monitoring systems, lighting, and pumps. Responses must be submitted via email to Laurie Martin and Jay Wertenberger by 5:00 pm PDT on June 6th, 2025, with the RFI period open from April 14th to June 6th, 2025. Respondents can answer as many or as few of the ten provided questions as they choose, with submissions limited to 10 pages.

This RFI is not a formal solicitation and does not guarantee future funding or deployment opportunities, with no specific set-aside designations applied to the potential contract. The information request is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Water Power Technologies Office and falls under the NAICS Category 334515 for Instrument Manufacturing for Measuring and Testing Electricity and Electrical Signals. While no specific award values or budget ranges are currently specified, the primary objective is to gather technical information about potential current energy devices, including power generation capabilities, mooring systems, energy transfer methods, siting requirements, maintenance needs, and previous testing experiences. The ultimate goal is to assess the potential for integrating marine energy technologies with coastal aquaculture operations through a comprehensive technical exploration.

Notice text

Responses to this RFI shall be sent by email to Laurie Martin (laurie.martin@pnnl.gov) and Jay Wertenberger (jay.wertenberger@pnnl.gov) by no later than 5:00 pm PDT on June 6th, 2025.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is requesting information from developers, owners, and/or manufacturers of small-scale current energy devices capable of deployment and operation to power coastal aquaculture operations. This Request for Information (RFI) will be open for responses beginning on April 14th, 2025, and ending on June 6th, 2025, with responses submitted no later than 5:00 pm PDT. Respondents may answer as many or as few questions as they would like.

The information gained from this RFI will inform the feasibility assessment and planning for co-location of aquaculture and current energy resources.  The purpose of the current energy device will be to provide electricity to the aquaculture system for a potential future pilot or demonstration deployment and to further understanding of the potential to co-locate marine energy with aquaculture from the perspective of a marine energy developer, owner, or manufacturer. This is not a Request for Proposal. PNNL is not planning deployment opportunities at this time and responses to this RFI do not bind PNNL to any further actions related to this topic.
