About this opportunity

The Department of the Air Force's (DAF) Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) on Runway Independent Mobility / Next Generation Intra-theater Airlift (NGIA). The goal is to enhance existing airlift capability and capacity with an intra-theater platform that can operate on unimproved or damaged runways to support Agile Combat Employment.

The primary mission is intra-theater airlift to transport cargo and personnel, with secondary missions including joint support, forward area refueling, rapid force projection, and non-traditional base defense. AFRL is seeking information from industry on strategies for risk reduction experiments, innovative aircraft designs, high-impact low-TRL technologies, digital engineering, supportability concepts, key tradeoffs, required test facilities, power and thermal management, operational analysis, and teaming arrangements. Responses are due by November 1, 2024, and respondents may present at a virtual Stakeholders' Forum in mid-November. This RFI does not constitute a solicitation or obligation for the government to procure any products or services.

Runway Independent Mobility / Next Generation Intra-theater Airlift (NGIA) Request for Information (RFI)

The Department of the Air Force’s (DAF’s) goal is to enhance existing airlift capability and capacity with an intra-theater platform that can fight through damaged infrastructure on responsive timelines. The primary mission will include intra-theater airlift to support Agile Combat Employment (ACE) for both cluster-to-cluster and intra-cluster movement of cargo and personnel to/from unimproved surfaces and/or damaged runways. Secondary missions will include joint support, forward area refueling point (FARP) operations, rapid force projection, and non-traditional base defense.

The emphasis of this RFI is to expand the potential solution space by considering a platform with short to very short takeoff and landing performance to specifically address the primary and secondary contested logistics mission outlined above.

AFRL/RQ is seeking information from industry to help shape future AFRL investments in this area. Specific request for information is detailed in the attached RFI document RFI-AFRL-RQKP-2024-0002.
