Update #1 ·
United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) recently concluded the Phase I Embedded Engine Program with the validation of inlet design tools with and without flow control; the design of a set of inlets in the presence of Boundary Layer Ingestion (BLI), including multiple flow control approaches; and a first pass at demonstration of loosely-coupled inlet/fan calculations. This work shall enable Phase II of the program, in which UTRC shall focus on the aerodynamic design of an inlet and distortion-tolerant fan stage for a high-performance embedded engine configuration. The configuration shall be derived from an audit of existing vehicle-level systems studies to identify regions of design space that provide the highest aircraft-level performance benefits for Blended Wing Body (BWB) propulsion systems. UTRC shall then engage in mechanical design and fabrication of an inlet and fan test hardware, and validation testing of the new concept in an appropriate high-Reynolds-number NASA wind tunnel.
