•1.3  Background.  The Marinship exhibit is located inside the San Francisco Bay Model Visitor Center, a WWII-era building originally used for warehouse storage of the Marinship Shipyard.  The San Francisco Bay Model was built in 1956-57 as a 3-dimensional hydraulic model of the San Francisco Bay estuary, and is owned and operated by the San Francisco District, US Army Corps of Engineers. The Marinship exhibit interprets the development and impact of the shipyard built by Bechtel Corporation during WWII on the Sausalito Waterfront.

•1.4  Existing Conditions. The Marinship exhibit was installed in 1986 and is approximately 2,655 square feet of exhibit space. It is a series of large enclosed, plexi-glass cases, supported by a steel angle iron structure, (see photos in Attachment A).  The exhibit is inside the main building which is not temperature, dust or humidity controlled. The cases are loosely assembled boxes that allow ambient dust, air, humidity and temperature to be freely exchanged from outside to inside the cases.  Lighting is low voltage halogen fixtures that are not adjusted for lighting textiles or paper.  It is assumed that the lighting is not appropriate for illuminating of fragile or easily degraded objects.
