Notice text

Procurement of LLWAS poles and installation services from a single source is considered to be in the FAA’s best interest. A single type of LLWAS pole is used at numerous airports throughout the National Airspace System (NAS) and already have been installed and used exclusively at OMA and STL for the existing LLWAS systems.

A single source is the sole supplier for a unique pole configuration for the existing LLWAS pole systems including infrastructure for the LLWAS systems that are currently in operation at both OMA and STL.

All poles and equipment in an LLWAS system should be the same and not be mixed with different pole designs, manufactures and suppliers. A harmonious design creates efficiency for both the engineer and the field maintenance technician. Testing procedures for the existing system are known while the testing procedures for other pole systems are not.

Procurement from other than a single source could impact the safety of the NAS potentially resulting in loss of life if wind shear events occur during the time these systems are waiting to be upgraded with the new poles.
