About this opportunity
The National Science Foundation seeks proposals through a two-phase Broad Agency Announcement for its Convergence Accelerator 2022 Cohort program. The solicitation requests convergence research projects aligned with one of three tracks: enhancing opportunities for persons with disabilities, sustainable materials for global challenges, or food and nutrition security. Phase 1 awards up to $750,000 will fund planning and team formation for one year. Phase 2 awards up to $5 million over two years will develop deliverable prototypes. Offerors must submit a Letter of Intent by June 2, 2022 and Phase 1 proposals are due July 20, 2022. Proposals will be evaluated based on intellectual merit and broader impacts.
There is no set-aside designation. Acceptable proposals may be submitted under NAICS codes 541712 or various PSC codes by for-profit businesses, non-profits, and institutions of higher education based in the United States. Phase 1 awards will provide up to $750,000 for one year of research. For Track I proposals including Australian participants, additional funding of up to AUD 255,000 in Phase 1 and AUD 1.624 million in Phase 2 may be provided by Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. Research performance will take place at locations of recipients.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Convergence Accelerator program addresses national-scale societal challenges through use-inspired convergence research. Using a convergence approach and innovation processes like human-centered design, user discovery, as well as team science and integration of multidisciplinary research, the Convergence Accelerator program seeks to transition basic research and discovery into practice – to solve high-impact societal challenges aligned with specific research themes—Track H: Enhancing Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities; Track I: Sustainable Materials for Global Challenges; and Track J: Food & Nutrition Security.
NSF Convergence Accelerator track themes are chosen in concordance with the themes identified during the program’s ideation process that aligns with topics thathave the potential for significant national impact. The NSF Convergence Accelerator implements a two-phase program. Phase 1 awardees receive resources to further develop their convergence research ideas and to identify important partnerships and resources to accelerate their projects. Phase 2 awardees receive significant resources leading to deliverable research prototypes and sustainability plans.
The purpose of NSF Convergence Accelerator is to provide research opportunities to U.S. for-profit businesses, non-profit organizations, and institutions of higher education, and their partners, to conduct a variety of research projects that will support the strategic objectives of the NSF. The NSF Convergence Accelerator implements a two-phase program. Both phases of the program’s convergence research are described in this BAA and the corresponding program solicitation that can be found here: (Insert LINK). The purpose of this parallel funding opportunity of BAA is to provide increased opportunities for proposals that are led by non‑academic entities.
