About this opportunity
The Air Force Research Laboratory is conducting market research through a Request for Information to assess industry capabilities in onboard enthalpy management, power generation, thermal management, and integrated thermal-power technologies for future reusable hypersonic aircraft systems, with responses due August 15, 2026.
AFRL seeks information on novel concepts, validated modeling approaches, and risk-reduction strategies for mid-term auxiliary power technologies (targeting 2030–2035 system-level TRL 5+) that generate mechanical and/or electrical power as integrated alternatives to discrete thermal battery architectures; thermal management technologies requiring innovative fuel technologies and fluid-based cooling solutions beyond onboard fuel; and integrated power and thermal subsystems. Key technical areas include onboard power systems for hypersonic vehicles, alternative thermal management strategies, propulsion and fuel system integration, vehicle systems integration and operability, actuation and flight control, and modeling and analysis capabilities.
This RFI is market research only and does not constitute a commitment to contract or promise of a future RFP. The government will not pay response costs, and non-response does not preclude participation in future procurement. Respondents must clearly mark proprietary information and must not submit classified data. Responses are limited to one summary quad and a maximum of 20 charts.
AFRL anticipates hosting a Virtual Stakeholders' Forum in mid-September 2026 where respondents may request to present their response verbally to a government-only audience for up to 30 minutes. Clarification requests must be submitted no later than seven business days prior to RFI closure. Points of contact: Justin Delmar (Primary TPOC) and Mitch Boisel (Program Manager) for technical questions; Kenya Martin (Contracting Officer) for contractual and business questions.
Notice text
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is conducting market research to identify and assess industry capabilities for onboard enthalpy management, including power generation, thermal management, and integrated thermal and power technologies for future reusable hypersonic aircraft systems.
This RFI seeks information on novel concepts, validated modeling approaches, and risk-reduction strategies for mid-term auxiliary power technologies, components, and systems which generate necessary mechanical and/or electrical power as an integrated alternative to discrete thermal battery architectures; thermal management technologies, components, and systems requiring innovative fuel technologies and/or fluid-based cooling solutions beyond onboard fuel; and integrated power & thermal subsystem technologies. The primary purpose of this effort is to inform near-term program needs and mid-term program development.
