About this opportunity
The Department of the Air Force Air Education and Training Command has published a sole source notice of intent to award a contract to Red Thunder Air Shows for YAK-50 aerobatic performer services. The 81st Training Wing at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi requires this specialized aerial demonstration for their 2025 Air Show Open House scheduled for October 31 through November 2, 2025. The government is proceeding with a non-competitive award under FAR 6.302-1(a)(2)(ii)(B), having determined that only one source is available to meet this specific requirement. Market research conducted through AbilityOne, UNICOR, and GSA Advantage yielded no alternative vendors capable of providing the required service. The contracting activity is being handled by the 81st Contracting Squadron.
The primary objective is to secure aerial demonstration services featuring the vintage "WarBird" YAK-50 aircraft for the upcoming air show event. While this is not a request for competitive quotes, the government will consider any capability statements or quotes submitted by 1:00 PM CST on October 14, 2025, via email to joshua.brown.138@us.af.mil. The sole source justification is based on the unique nature of the vintage aircraft and the extremely limited number of performers capable of operating YAK-50 aircraft for aerobatic displays. Red Thunder Air Shows has been identified as the only known contractor with the capability to provide both the aircraft and conduct the required aerobatic performances. The government retains full discretion in determining whether to compete the proposed contract based on any responses received, and has indicated plans to consider a wider variety of historic aircraft display options for future events to prevent recurring sole source limitations.
