About this opportunity
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Office of Acquisitions and Grants is seeking qualified contractors to provide neutron irradiation services for 40Ar/39Ar geochronology laboratories located in Denver, Moffett, and Reston. This is a market research Sources Sought Notice issued under FAR Part 10 for an anticipated Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract. Contractors must demonstrate experience irradiating mineral and rock samples in a nuclear reactor to convert stable potassium-39 to radioactive argon-39, with the capability to place samples in a cadmium liner within the reactor core to minimize neutron flux gradients. The reactor must have published neutron interference correction values available in scientific literature for seven specific isotopic ratios, and acceptance will be measured by noble gas mass spectrometer measurements confirming sufficient 39Ar production for precise geochronology on laboratory standards including Bodie Hills, Taylor Creek, Fish Canyon sanidine, and GA1550 biotite. Interested firms must submit capability statements limited to five pages to the Contracting Officer, Joel Berberena, at jberberena@usgs.gov by February 16, 2026, with the subject line "Sources Sought - Neutron Irradiation Services."
This procurement is set aside for Total Small Business under NAICS code 541380 (Testing Laboratories and Services) with a size standard of $19,000,000. No incumbent contractor or award value has been identified in this sources sought notice, as this is market research to assess contractor availability and capability prior to formal solicitation. The anticipated contract structure includes a base year plus four years of service, though actual ordering periods may be adjusted based on the final contract award date. Capability statements must include company name and address, point of contact, UEI number and SAM registration status, business size and socioeconomic status, description of capability and experience with similar services, and facility capabilities with typical scheduling availability. The government will not reimburse respondents for their response costs to this sources sought notice.
