About this opportunity

NASA Headquarters has issued a Special Notice announcing an Industry Event for the Sustainable Land Imaging (SLI) Mission Alternatives Analysis Team (MAAT) scheduled to begin August 4th, 2025. The notice seeks industry providers capable of supplying capabilities that meet or exceed the minimum observational requirements of the existing Landsat-9 mission. NASA aims to continue the legacy of global land surface imaging that has been ongoing since 1972 through a cost-effective solution available by 2031. The mission must operate continuously for at least 5 years and collect moderate-resolution, multispectral image data of the global land mass. This Special Notice does not constitute a commitment by NASA to take action but serves to gauge industry interest and capabilities.

The primary objective is to develop satellite imaging capabilities that ensure data consistency with Landsat-9 while distributing standard Landsat products to users at no cost with approximately six-hour latency. Interested organizations must submit a Notice of Interest to Participate (NOIP) by July 31st, 2025, through the provided Eventbrite registration page. The event includes a main industry session on August 4th and one-on-one conference room meetings on August 5th-6th for open discussions about problem constraints and capabilities. Participation is restricted to organizations without bilateral relationships with China, and NASA will not publicly disclose proprietary information shared during the event. The anticipated funding ranges from $70 million in FY26 to $130.2 million in FY30, with technical requirements including simultaneous imaging of 11 spectral bands and precise radiometric calibration standards. The mission targets imaging the Earth's equator at mid-morning local time with coverage of any sun-lit area within the Landsat-9 coverage area at least every 16 days.
