About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Materiel Command Contracting Command Detroit Arsenal has awarded contract W911PT26PA165 to DMG Mori Erie on a sole-source basis for one DMG Mori CNC Mill Turn Machine, model NT6600/6000, with an option for one additional identical machine, with a total estimated value of $8 million ($4 million per machine).
The justification rests on compatibility and cost-avoidance. Watervliet Arsenal invested $105,000 in process development, programming, and post-processor development during an FY 2013 full-and-open competition that procured three DMG Mori Seiki NHX-5000 machines. The NT6600/6000 uses the same post-processor as the NHX product line. Awarding to a different manufacturer would require duplicate expenditures totaling $717,594, including $25,000 for new post-processor software, $45,052 in training, $554,048 for programming interoperability, $55,404 for program maintenance, and $38,090 to rewrite existing programs. Production delays of 6–9 weeks would result from training and system familiarization. A May 18, 2026 Sources Sought synopsis generated five vendor responses; only DMG Mori and Bayou Ohana (an authorized DMG Mori reseller) met compatibility requirements. Market research conducted in April 2026 confirmed DMG Mori as the sole manufacturer meeting requirements. The equipment will be used for production of 105mm and 120mm cannon tubes at Watervliet Arsenal. Legal counsel approved the justification on June 24, 2026, and the Contracting Officer approved it on July 2, 2026. The procurement is a Firm-Fixed-Price purchase order funded with FY 2026 Weapons and Tracked Combat Vehicles–Other Procurement, Army appropriations.
