About this opportunity

The Department of Energy has issued a Special Notice for a licensing opportunity related to catalysts for oxygen and hydrogen evolution in the electrolytic hydrogen production process. This technology aims to provide a novel catalyst composition that significantly enhances the electrochemical properties and improves the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and stability, enabling a cleaner and more efficient method of hydrogen production through water electrolysis using renewable energy sources.

The purpose of this opportunity is to license the patented technology, which involves doping single atoms of transition metals into a nickel-iron-oxide matrix to create a high-performance catalyst for OER and hydrogen evolution. The Special Notice outlines the benefits of this technology, including the elimination of critical and expensive elements, lower system costs, and the potential for domestic manufacturing. The opportunity is open to a wide range of companies, including those in the electrolysis industry, catalyst manufacturers, electrode producers, and membrane electrode assembly companies. The deadline for interested parties to contact the Department of Energy for more information is October 26, 2024.

Hydrogen is in great demand, but production relies heavily on hydrocarbons utilization. This process contributes greenhouse gases release into the atmosphere. Each kilogram of hydrogen produced creates approximately 10 kilograms of carbon dioxide, but most of it is not being captured. This technology is a cleaner way to make hydrogen through water electrolysis using designed electrocatalysts, with a focus on oxygen evolution as well targeting for hydrogen, using renewable solar, wind or tidal energy.

Description

This invention provides a novel catalyst composition with a unique formulation that involves doping single atoms into a matrix, significantly enhancing the electrochemical properties of the catalyst and superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and stability. Two electrodes create the two reactions, one for OER and one for hydrogen. This invention provides a novel catalyst composition comprising later transition metal-doped nickel-iron-oxide, which demonstrates superior OER activity and stability. The unique formulation involves doping single atoms of transition metals into a NiFeOx matrix, which significantly enhances the electrochemical properties of the catalyst.

Benefits

  • Elimination of critical, expensive elements
  • Less costly system design
  • Low cost hydrogen production
  • Domestically manufactured

Applications and Industries
