About this opportunity
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), a Department of Energy facility, anticipates procuring a Large Format Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) System for its Engineering Division, with responses due November 18, 2026. No set-aside is used. The attached RFI (KT-2026-03) is market research only: it is not a solicitation, no contract will be awarded from it, and responses will establish a qualified sources list for a future Request for Quotes (RFQ). Respondents must email the completed Response Form to kktays@lbl.gov by 5:00 PM PT on November 18, 2026. LBNL will not accept vendor questions during the RFI phase and will not reimburse preparation costs.
The preliminary requirements call for nominal travel of approximately 800 mm (X), 600 mm (Y), and 800 mm (Z), a workpiece envelope near 1,250 mm × 1,020 mm × 800 mm, and a 3,000 kg workpiece capacity. The system must support full-height submerged cutting and automatic wire threading and broken-wire recovery at full height. Complete-system compliance with NFPA 79 and UL 508A is required, certified by an OSHA-recognized Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). LBNL requires West Coast field service organization support. Vendors must submit technical documentation and drawings substantiating claimed capabilities, and LBNL will rate responses as Complies, Partially Complies, or Does Not Comply.
The NAICS code is 333517 (Machine Tool Manufacturing) and the PSC is 3419 (Miscellaneous Machine Tools). No award value, budget, or incumbent is stated.
Notice text
LBNL’s Engineering Division provides advanced mechanical engineering, fabrication, and manufacturing support for scientific research across multiple DOE Office of Science facilities and programs. A large format wire EDM system supports this mission by enabling high-precision, non-contact machining of oversized, complex, or high-density components such as accelerator structures, detector chassis, superconducting magnet components, and specialized tooling ensuring parts meet the strict geometric tolerances, surface finish requirements, and material integrity essential for scientific instrumentation.
