About this opportunity
The Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Lifecycle Management Center at Tinker Air Force Base anticipates soliciting a cargo lighting upgrade system for KC-135 aircraft, with responses to this pre-solicitation notice due October 5, 2026. The procurement is set aside for small business.
The current KC-135 cargo lighting system operates in only two states—off or full brightness—creating operational and safety conflicts. Full brightness impairs the boom operator's night vision during the critical transition to the unlit boom pod for air refueling operations, while completely dark cargo areas present navigation hazards to crew members. The modification seeks to replace this binary system with a flexible lighting configuration that enhances both mission effectiveness and crew safety.
Work falls under NAICS 336413 (Other Aircraft Parts and Auxiliary Equipment Manufacturing) and PSC 1680 (Miscellaneous Aircraft Accessories and Components). No anticipated award value, period of performance, quantity of aircraft, or additional technical specifications are stated in this pre-solicitation notice.
Notice text
The current KC-135 cargo lighting system is limited to only two configurations, off or full brightness, which creates significant operational and safety challenges. When the lights are at full brightness, they impair the boom operator's night vision during the critical transition to the unlit boom pod for air refueling operations. Conversely, when the cargo lights are turned off to preserve night vision, crew members must navigate a dark cargo area, which creates a safety hazard. This modification seeks to resolve these issues by providing a flexible lighting system that enhances both mission effectiveness and crew safety
