Description
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) intends to issue a sole source award utilizing Simplified Acquisition Procedures in accordance with FAR 13.106-1(b)(1). Award will be issued to Chugach Regional Resource Commission (DUNS 884237561), Alutiiq Pride Shellfish Hatchery.
Service is to provide culturing service of Pinto Abalone a shellfish species found in southeast Alaska. The hatchery will receive 25 adult individuals and try to reproduce them to make juveniles which they will then provide back to our Lab for research on juvenile habitat preference and aquaculture feeding experiments. The will also characterize the reproduction stages for the abalone. Services for culturing abalone and associated research for a base period and one option year.
There is only one source for Culturing abalone in Alaska and is not a readily available service with in Alaska. It requires permitting from the state for collection and holding and must be linked to a research project to obtain the permits. The service of culturing is also very skilled and specific due to the specific nature of pinto ablaone. Based on the Alaska Department of Fish and Game website and permit office there are no hatcheries that are currently spawning or attempting to spawn abalone. Alutiiq Pride in Seward was one of the few hatcheries along with one in southeast Alaska Ketchikan that have experience doing it in the past but only Alutiiq had some success with getting a second generation to develop.
