About this opportunity
The U.S. Geological Survey is conducting market research to identify qualified vendors capable of providing an in-house gamma-counting system, with responses due August 12, 2026 by 1700 PT. This sources sought announcement is not a commitment to award; it serves planning purposes only and the government will not reimburse response costs.
Place of performance is the Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center in Santa Cruz, California. The system must be new and non-portable, designed to replace obsolete equipment. It must accommodate aquatic sediment samples of 1 to 10 milliliters and fit within existing lab space (30 inches deep, 60 inches wide, 54 inches high). Current sample vials have 15-millimeter outer diameter and 10-milliliter volume.
Technical requirements include a high-purity germanium well detector (120 cubic centimeter minimum volume, well tube diameter 15.5–16 millimeters, 1.4 keV full width at half maximum resolution at 122 keV), low-background J-type cryostat, 25-liter liquid nitrogen recycler with 2-year warranty, low-background lead shield with 4-inch-thick walls and graded interior liner with stand, digital multi-channel analyzer with Ethernet or USB communication, MCA emulation software, HPGe detector efficiency transfer software with cascade summing corrections, and networked gamma analysis software supporting database management, reporting, and Excel integration without third-party database tools. All software must be Windows 11 compatible and approved by the Department of the Interior for networked federal systems.
Vendors must provide four days of on-site installation, configuration, training, and travel; extended five-year warranties (labor, materials, return shipping) for the detector, cryostat, recycler, and MCA; and one 2-day follow-on technical support visit within Years 1–3 post-purchase. Period of performance is 12 months from award, with possible extension for unavoidable delays. The NAICS code is 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing), with a small-business size standard of 1,000 employees. Vendors must specify country of manufacture and demonstrate how their offering meets all specifications including size, warranty, and technical support. Responses must be submitted by email to tracy_huot@ios.doi.gov only; hardcopy and SAM portal submissions will not be accepted.
