Project Summary

The USDA-ARS Plant Science Research facility in Raleigh, North Carolina has four aluminum framed approximately 2850ft² greenhouses used for research purposes. The lower 34” of exterior walls and interior partitions are composed of corrugated Transite panels. The panels appear to have maintained structural integrity but are showing early signs of degradation in some areas due to exposure to moisture.  The USDA is seeking information about how best to remedy this situation, either by means of complete asbestos removal and replacement with a suitable material or managing the asbestos in place via encapsulation. Work may include modifications to existing Transite panels at penetration points for electrical conduits and drain piping.

Objective

The objective is to gather information regarding services offered by licensed contractors employed in asbestos abatement prior to issuing a Statement of Work and Solicitation for bids. This information includes methods and processes of abatement, feasibility of each method, impacts of each method, timelines for work performed on site, anticipated down time of affected areas, possible alteration of Transite panels, and information about the materials used in asbestos mitigation. Pictures of typical Transite panels can be seen in the section entitled “Pictures” at the end of this document.
