About this opportunity

The US Army Contracting Command-Redstone, Operations, Services, & Training Division has published a Special Notice seeking market research to identify potential sources for ferrogram makers. These specialized analytical devices are used in analytical ferrography, a non-destructive optical technique for evaluating wear particles in oil and grease samples from military equipment components such as engines, transmissions, and gearboxes. The ferrogram maker, also known as an analytical ferrograph, separates wear particles from lubricating samples and deposits them on glass slides called ferrograms for microscopic analysis. This technology represents one of the most sensitive, non-intrusive methods for determining weapon system component health through wear particle analysis. The procurement effort falls under NAICS code 334516 for Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing and PSC code 6640 for Laboratory Equipment and Supplies.

The primary objective of this Special Notice is to conduct market research supporting the Army Oil Analysis Program (AOAP), which provides continuous in-service lubricant sample analysis for Army requirements worldwide. Interested contractors have until July 7, 2025, to respond to this market research solicitation, which was posted on July 2, 2025. The notice does not specify particular set-aside requirements, indicating it is open to all qualified contractors regardless of business size or socioeconomic status. The procurement supports the AOAP's mission to assess the size, shape, composition, and concentration of wear particles in mechanical systems, enabling predictive maintenance and health monitoring of critical military equipment. Contractors responding to this Special Notice should demonstrate capabilities in manufacturing or supplying analytical laboratory instruments specifically designed for ferrographic analysis and wear particle evaluation.

Notice text

The US Army Contracting Command-Redstone, Operations, Services, & Training Division, plans to obtain information to serve as market research to help identify potential sources that can provide ferrogram makers.  Ferrogram makers are used in analytical Ferrography.   Analytical Ferrography, also known as wear particle analysis, is a non-destructive, optical technique used to evaluate the size, shape, composition, and concentration of wear particles in an oil or grease sample to determine a component’s (engine, transmission, gearbox, etc.) wear condition.  This technology is one of the more sensitive, non-intrusive methods used to determine a weapon system component’s health.  The ferrogram maker, also called an analytical ferrograph, is a device used in analytical ferrography to separate wear particles from a lubricating oil or grease sample and deposit them on a glass slide called a ferrogram. This process allows for microscopic analysis of the wear particles to determine the type and severity of wear in machinery.  This effort directly contributes to the AOAP’s mission to provide continuous in-service lubricant sample analysis in support of Army requirements worldwide.
