About this opportunity
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking to procure an Extended Range Handheld Laser Welding & Cleaning System for its Fabrication Technology Office (FTO). The system is specifically designed to support advanced manufacturing and materials research, with requirements for high-precision welding and cleaning capabilities on various metals including stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, nickel alloys, and copper. NIST is conducting market research to understand potential vendor capabilities and barriers to participation, with responses due by May 12, 2025, at 2:00 pm ET. The Sources Sought Notice requires potential vendors to submit manufacturer specifications, manufacturing location, company details, and SAM registration status. Respondents must indicate whether they are a small or large business, and responses will be used to help NIST structure its future procurement strategy.
The pre-solicitation notice indicates no specific set-aside designation for this procurement. The system requires advanced technical specifications, including a maximum average laser power of 2000W, peak pulse power of 3000W, and the ability to weld metals 3-8mm thick. The procurement calls for one complete system with all specified accessories, a user guide, and performance testing verification. The system will be delivered to NIST in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with training provided for up to six users. A one-year warranty is required, covering repairs, technical support, and parts including the laser source, gun cable, and nozzles. Payment will be structured in a single stage, with 100% payment after successful installation, acceptance, testing, and invoice submission. The system is classified under NAICS category 333992 (Welding and Soldering Equipment Manufacturing) and PSC category 5999 (Miscellaneous Electrical and Electronic Components).
Notice text
The Fabrication Technology Office (FTO) provides a wide range of engineering, fabrication, and technical services to support the creation of unique measurement instruments and scientific apparatus needed by NIST scientists and research staff. The group provides the mission critical engineering and manufacturing expertise, and equipment needed to produce specialized parts and subassemblies for a variety of one-of-a-kind instruments conceived by NIST scientists and engineers. A cadre of highly skilled engineers, instrument makers, and engineering technicians provide this core capability. Beyond fabricating parts and equipment, group staff members work collaboratively with NIST research staff providing research support, technical consulting, and testing services. The group specializes in single job/prototype work and short production runs of unique mechanical components. The group also provides mechanical engineering design, optics and glass fabrication, and overall technical solutions for the fabrication and assembly of electromechanical devices.
Requirement: The FTO requires one (1) Extended Range Handheld Laser Welding & Cleaning System to support advanced manufacturing and materials research. The system will be used in a laboratory environment to perform high-precision welding and cleaning tasks on various materials, including stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, nickel alloys, and copper.
