About this opportunity
NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center has a requirement for twenty (20) human-rated SLS Exploration Upper Stage Engines (EUSE) to support the Space Launch System (SLS) Artemis missions V through X. The first four engines may need to be delivered in the mid-FY27 timeframe to serve as backup engines for Artemis V. NASA is seeking a high-performance liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen rocket engine that is compatible with the existing Exploration Upper Stage (EUS) design and interfaces, with key requirements including 24,750 lbf of thrust, 465.5 seconds of Isp, and a mass of 490-530 lbm. NASA is interested in a low-cost, mature, and readily available engine solution to minimize development time and costs and has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to gather industry feedback on the planned approach and acquisition strategy.
This procurement is not set aside, and there are no specific incumbents or current contractors identified. The RFI indicates that NASA is considering a Firm-Fixed-Price contract approach and is interested in industry inputs on contract type, incentive structures, and teaming arrangements. NASA does not wish to preclude potential commercial use of the engine or components. Responses to the RFI are due by 4:00 pm CST on November 8, 2024, and this information will be used to finalize the upcoming Request for Proposal (RFP).
