About this opportunity
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency seeks proposals to develop tools for creating, measuring, and testing human-machine interfaces under the Enhancing Design for Graceful Extensibility program. Proposals are due by July 29, 2021 and must investigate innovative approaches enabling revolutionary advances in science, devices, or capabilities to provide situational awareness and enable system operators to adapt to unexpected situations. Proposals will be evaluated at regular challenge events over four years and awards are anticipated for multiple teams investigating quantification of situational awareness, composable design methods, and a reconfigurable interface testing platform.
There is no set-aside designation for this opportunity. Research proposals are requested under NAICS code 541715 for three technical areas and the Test and Evaluation Simulation Engine. Evaluation will take place over three phases through FY2025 with the potential for multiple awards per technical area and one award for the simulation engine. Proposed budgets and timelines must be included in the submission templates provided by June 1, 2021.
Notice text
The Defense Sciences Office (DSO) at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative research proposals for developing the tools necessary to create, measure, and test Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) that provide enough situational awareness (SA) of a system’s processes and status and of the operational environment so the operator can adapt the system in unexpected situations. EDGE seeks design capabilities that will be fast, quantifiable, repeatable, and manageable enough for HMI concept design, development, and testing to be integrated into the larger system’s design processes. Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or capabilities that enable HMI development. Specifically excluded is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.
