About this opportunity
The U.S. Geological Survey, Columbia Environmental Research Center, has awarded a sole-source delivery order to CEM Corporation (Matthews, NC) for an Energized Dispersive Guided Extraction (EDGE) instrument on August 28, 2026, under GSAR 538.7104-3(a).
The justification asserts that the EDGE instrument is the only technology capable of meeting USGS-CERC's specific research requirements for extracting samples with limited available mass, such as insects and very small invertebrates used in toxicity assessments. The instrument combines Pressurized Fluid Extraction and Dispersive Solid Phase Extraction, enabling extraction of samples down to 0.1 grams. CEM Corporation holds the patent for this technology. The EDGE design and associated Q-Cups minimize downtime between extractions, reduce cleaning difficulty compared to traditional systems, support higher sample throughput, and lower contamination risk.
The delivery order includes the EDGE 60 High Torque 120V Sales Centrifuge Rack, centrifuge racks, Q-Cups, Q-Discs, tube kits, a Customer Care Plus Plan with one on-site maintenance visit, 24-hour telephone support, 20 percent discounts on additional services, lifetime applications and technical support, half-day installation and training, and ground shipping within the Continental United States. Market research included professional seminars, colleague discussions, internet searches, and professional publication review. Place of performance is Columbia, MO. The contracting officer certifies that costs will be determined fair and reasonable through comparison with government estimates and previously awarded government contracts. Future acquisitions for the same or similar items will be competed to the maximum extent possible.
