About this opportunity

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is conducting market research to identify potential manufacturers for a specialized lid assembly for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Near Detector cryostat. The Department of Energy is sponsoring this procurement, seeking a supplier capable of producing a complex lid structure that consists of 9 sections, with specific focus on the central "module row" lid. Ideal candidates must demonstrate capabilities in structural and hermetic welding, stainless steel fabrication, foam insulation handling, helium leak detection, and dimensional inspection, preferably with in-house capabilities across all manufacturing steps. The Request for Information (RFI) targets manufacturers classified under NAICS Code 332999 with 750 or fewer employees. Responses are due by 3:00 PM Pacific on April 4, 2025, and must be submitted via email to Brian Zatkow at bzatkow@lbl.gov.

The procurement does not have a specific set-aside designation and is open to various qualified manufacturers. The lid assembly weighs approximately 6,500 pounds and includes a steel frame structure, stainless steel membrane, polyurethane foam insulation, and stainless steel feedthroughs. While no specific award value is mentioned, the technical drawings suggest a high-precision component with tight manufacturing tolerances following ASME standards. The project is part of an international neutrino research experiment aimed at exploring fundamental questions about matter and universal evolution. This RFI is strictly for market research purposes, and respondents are cautioned that submitting information does not guarantee future solicitation opportunities or provide any competitive advantage in potential subsequent procurements.

Notice text

The University of California, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is conducting market research to identify sources that possess the capabilities and experience necessary to produce a lid assembly for a cryogenic tank.

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment project (DUNE) is a leading-edge, international experiment for neutrino science. Discoveries over the past half-century have put neutrinos, the most abundant matter particles in the universe, in the spotlight for further research into several fundamental questions about the nature of matter and the evolution of the universe.

The DUNE Near Detector (DUNE-ND) will record neutrino interactions. A key component of DUNE-ND is a particle detector housed inside of an insulated cryogenic tank (or "cryostat"). The lid of the cryostat is split into 9 sections and the central “module row” lid used to support the detector modules is the subject of this Request for Information.

Please see the attached RFI document and supplemental drawing package for more information and response instructions.
