About this opportunity

NASA Johnson Space Center is requesting information on head-down tilt bedrest research capabilities in the United States to support human spaceflight-related studies and multi-discipline research requiring periods of up to 90 consecutive days of bedrest (30–60 days more typical), with capabilities statements due July 15, 2026. This is a Request for Information only; the Government has no obligation for award.

The Human Research Program investigates and mitigates risks to astronaut health and performance in exploration missions, utilizing bedrest analogs to evaluate technologies and countermeasures prior to spaceflight implementation. Current research focuses on Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome, sensorimotor function impacts, and countermeasure effectiveness.

A qualifying facility must accommodate 4 to 12 bedrest test participants for extended durations in strict head-down tilt positioning with on-site or nearby medical and laboratory facilities. Respondents should address participant recruitment and screening processes; resource allocation and capacity trade-offs; implementation of specialized equipment and operational contexts; nutraceutical and pharmaceutical research capabilities; food and metabolic kitchen management to maintain consistent participant weight; enforcement mechanisms for strict 6-degree head-down tilt positioning; hygiene protocols including showering procedures; and room size and occupancy consistency. Facilities must provide participant recruitment, medical monitoring, clinical care, data collection, and implementation of specific study measures. Additional HRP research requirements are available through the Human Research Roadmap at https://humanresearchroadmap.nasa.gov.

Notice text

This is strictly a request for information. The Government has no obligation for award. If interested, please provide a capabilities statement.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Human Research Program (HRP) is requesting information on head-down tilt bedrest research capabilities in the United States that could support human spaceflight related research studies as well as other multi-discipline research objectives requiring periods of up to 90 consecutive days of bedrest (30-60 days more typical).

The Human Research Program (HRP) investigates and mitigates the highest risks to astronaut health and performance in exploration missions.  The goal of the HRP is to provide human health and performance countermeasures, knowledge, technologies, and tools to enable safe, reliable, and productive human space exploration.  The scope of these goals includes both the successful completion of exploration missions and the preservation of astronaut health over the life of the astronaut. Due to the cost and complexity of spaceflight opportunities, deconditioning analogs such as head-down tilt bedrest are often utilized to evaluate potential technologies and countermeasures prior to spaceflight implementation.
