About this opportunity
NASA's Shared Services Center is procuring a DMP FLEX 200 Direct Metal Laser Sintering 3D printer manufactured by 3D Systems Inc., with proposals due June 22. This is a sole source procurement under FAR 12.102(a) authority; NASA has determined that 3D Systems is the sole provider capable of meeting the government's requirements.
Place of performance is John C. Stennis Space Center, Mississippi. The DMP FLEX 200 features a proprietary counter-rotating compaction roller layering mechanism that enables high Z-stroke accuracy, thin layer capability, and processing of diverse powder morphologies and particle sizes. The system achieves feature sizes as small as 150 micrometers with wall thickness of 100 microns, processes fine non-spherical particles, and supports aggressive unsupported geometries. It is equipped with a 500-watt laser source and maintains an inert build and supply chamber with air interlock protection to prevent oxidation and ensure material integrity. NASA asserts that no other vendor provides a system capable of meeting these combined salient features and that alternative systems would result in significant loss of rapid prototyping capability for high-resolution prototype components and hardware.
The procurement is conducted using Commercial Items acquisition procedures under FAR Part 12. NAICS code 334111 (Electronic Computer Manufacturing) and PSC 6695 (Combination and Miscellaneous Instruments) apply. Delivery is required no later than September 30, 2026, with a lead time not to exceed 20 weeks. Interested organizations may submit written capabilities statements by 7:00 a.m. Central Standard Time on June 22 to demonstrate whether the government should conduct competitive acquisition; however, the final decision to proceed remains with NASA. Oral communications are not acceptable. Contact Shanna L. Patterson, Procurement Specialist, at Shanna.L.Patterson@nasa.gov.
