About this opportunity

NASA's Shared Services Center is announcing a sole-source contract intent to Auburn University for correlation of process-induced defects and mechanical performance in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technology, with capability submissions due by 10:00 p.m. Central Time on July 31, 2026. This is not a request for quotes; price offers will not be reviewed at this time.

The work requires laboratory-based additive manufacturing, non-destructive evaluation, and mechanical testing services at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. The contractor must fabricate a minimum of 60 LPBF Inconel 718 mechanical test specimens and 10 metallography witness bars distributed across baseline and three intentional Lack of Fusion defect states. Technical scope includes integrated LPBF platform operation with advanced in-situ monitoring, layer-wise thermal data collection, high-resolution X-ray computed tomography scanning of all specimens, post-build heat treatment and static tensile and high-cycle fatigue testing per ASTM standards, full fractography on failed specimens, and development of Probability of Detection and Probability of False Alarm models aligned with MIL-HDBK-1823A. The contractor must deliver fabricated and tested specimens, feedstock certification, raw and processed data in open formats (TIFF, CSV, HDF5), validation metrics report, final test report with fractography, a technical white paper, and monthly status reports. The Government receives unlimited rights to all deliverables. Performance period is approximately six months from award. Interested organizations may submit written capabilities and qualifications to evaluate whether to conduct the procurement on a competitive basis. Oral communications are not acceptable.
