About this opportunity
The Department of the Navy Strategic Systems Programs awarded SGL Composites Inc. a $3,521,727 contract to convert 352,172 yards of AVTEX Rayon Cloth to Carbon Cloth for use in the Trident II Reentry Body Heatshield. Under the contract, SGL will purify the Carbon Cloth by removing alkali metal contaminants below 35 parts per million, conduct required testing to physical, mechanical and chemical standards, and store the finished Carbon Cloth. The work continues SGL's role as the sole supplier of carbon-phenolic heatshields for the Navy's Trident II missile program due to its proprietary rayon cleaning and heat treating facilities and processes.
Notice text
SSP awarded follow-on services to SGL Composites Inc. (formerly HITCO) to convert AVTEX Rayon Cloth to Carbon Cloth for the Trident II Reentry Body Heatshield. This objective will be accomplished through converting the Rayon Cloth to Carbon Cloth, removing alkali metal contaminants (below 35ppm), testing (to physical, mechanical and chemical requirements), and storing the purified Carbon Cloth.
SGL maintains proprietary facilities and processes for rayon cleaning and heat treating that no other company has been able to reproduce. Accordingly, SGL has been the sole supplier of carbon-phenolic heatshields for the Navy’s Mk4 and Mk5 reentry bodies for the Trident II. The Navy has accumulated and has access to a database of flight performance data on SGL carbon-phenolic materials resulting from hundreds of reentry body flight tests.
Awarded contract N00030-20-C-0042 to SGL COMPOSITES INC. for 3521727.00 on 2020-07-22.
