Statement of Requirements

Cleanroom Pump Maintenance and Rebuild

Physics Department

Naval Postgraduate School

1.0 Background/Introduction:

For the last 10 years, Naval Postgraduate School operates a specialized microfabrication facility in the Watkins Hall.

It is used for research by faculty from multiple departments as well as for instruction. The laboratory features 16 highly specialized instruments and many of those require use of vacuum pumps for operation. There is a total of 12 pumps with 8 needing servicing. These pumps are devices that require periodic maintenance and rebuilding, at any given day, it is almost given that there will be a failure at any given time. Repair vs maintenance is a much costlier option and setting up a contract for periodic maintenance of these would save government resources, especially in faculty labor if each repair is treated individually. It would also highly reduce incidence of down time that impacts both instruction and student thesis.

2.0 Minimal Technical Requirements/Salient Characteristics:

The current Government owned pumps are referenced below and are currently contained in a clean room environment. All of the units are located inside laboratories and clean rooms.
