About this opportunity
The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service seeks an Almaco R-1 Combine or equivalent for soybean and nitrogen fixation research, with quotations due May 29, 2026 (now closed). This is an unrestricted procurement with no set-aside.
Place of performance is Raleigh, NC 27606. The combine must be equipped with a 4-wheel drive, a 60-inch draper head with quick-attach throat, and a Grain Gauge / HarvestMaster H2 Classic or ALMACO D1 data collection system or equivalent. Shipping to the specified location and on-site training are required. No straw chopper is needed. The NAICS code is 333111 (Farm Machinery and Equipment Manufacturing); the small business size standard is 1,250 employees.
The period of performance runs from June 5, 2026 to December 31, 2027, with delivery required on an FOB Destination basis by December 31, 2027. Award will be made on a firm-fixed-price basis using lowest-price technically acceptable evaluation methodology, meaning only the lowest-priced quotation will be evaluated for technical acceptability initially. Past performance will be rated acceptable, neutral, or unacceptable based on demonstrated ability to meet contract requirements and Federal sources such as CPARS. Vendors proposing "or equal" products must submit detailed descriptive literature, illustrations, drawings, or website references demonstrating compliance with all salient characteristics; mere statements of compliance are insufficient. Quoters must be registered in SAM.gov at submission and award, and quotes must remain firm for 90 calendar days from receipt. Questions were due May 26, 2026.

Questions and Answers:
Q1: Is there a need for a 4-wheel drive?
A1: Yes. Four‑wheel drive improves safety when loading and unloading the combine from a trailer by providing better traction and control. Additionally, one of our locations has hilly, sandy terrain that makes harvesting difficult without four‑wheel drive.
Q2: Is there a need for a straw chopper?
A2: No.
Q3: Is a header required for this combine configuration?
A3: Yes. We require a 60-inch header to accommodate harvesting two rows with our current row spacing. Only a 60-inch draper head with a quick‑attach throat is compatible with this combine configuration.
Q4: Is a Grain Gauge / HarvestMaster system required for this solicitation?
A4: Yes. The weigh system allows weight and moisture data to be collected at harvest without needing to collect and process whole‑plot samples. This reduces post‑harvest processing, saves time, and improves operational efficiency. It also helps reduce errors during harvest by continuously tracking data throughout the field.
Q5: I noticed that there is no combine head or data collection unit included. The combine must have these in order to operate correctly. I also noticed there is nothing in the specifications regarding training or freight. Is it safe to assume that this will need to be included?
A5: We are looking for a “60"draper head with quick attach throat” and a “Harvestmaster H2 Classic or ALMACO D1 Data collection” system or equivalent. Additionaly we need shipping to our location as well as on-site training.
