About this opportunity

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Langley Research Center published an Award Notice on May 22, 2019 to noncompetitively procure an ABSL 8S20P 28V 30Ah Li-Ion Rechargeable Battery from ABSL Power Solutions Inc. for the Low-Earth Orbit Flight Test of an Inflatable Decelerator project. The battery, to be purchased for $200,000 per unit, was previously integrated into the reentry vehicle design under a prior order; selecting an alternate supplier would require redesigns estimated to cost $479,500.

Update #1 ·

NASA/LARC has a requirement for an ABSL 8S20P 28V 30Ah Li-Ion Rechargeable Battery

NASA/LARC intends to purchase the items from ABSL Power Solutions Inc. The System and Tank Heater Battery was ordered for EDU development in previous orders, and the associated interactions with other electrical components in the reentry vehicle have been designed with these specific parts as the baseline design. Awarding to a different vendor would lead to unacceptable delays in fulfilling NASA flight obligations. It would take substantial duplication of resources and time for another source to provide the required service and this additional expense is not expected to be recovered through competition.
