Tank RFI- Exhibit 1 to JPL Solicitation #YT-17-07 February 07, 2017
We are interested in information on the following two tank types for an Earth based demo of a Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) to be launched in 2019. These estimates are based on a 346 kg GLOM MAV. There is some flexibility in the design of these tanks. If a COTS option is available in a similar size, it will be considered.
Ox Tank:
Lowest Cost (assumed seamless Al liner)
Desire 15 month delivery time
Three Tanks (2 pressure cycle plus burst, 1 flight)
OD of tank cylinder: 57 cm
Tank head ellipse: 0.68 radius, 0.4 radius desired if possible
Volume: 160 L
Length of tank: minimize
Helium inlet line at center of top hemisphere: 1/4” OD, 300 series stainless tube (0.035 wall)
Oxidizer outlet line at center of bottom hemisphere: 1/2” OD, 300 series stainless tube (0.035 wall)
Oxidizer: Mon 3
Oxidizer Mass: 219.4 kg
Initial Ullage: 5%
Operating Pressure: 410 psia
MEOP: 500 psia
Burst safety factor: 2
Tank to structure Interface: forward and aft skirts similar to DAWN design; details are still TBD. Ideally the skirts will come off the tank cylinder. Skirt thickness is assumed 4mm and the skirt OD can extend beyond the 57 cm tank cylinder OD.
The tank and skirts will be load bearing primary structure (10,000 N thrust).
o Safety factors on the skirt sufficient to fly without testing. Verification by analysis only.
o 1-2 tanks to pressure cycle and burst and only proof testing on flight tank.
o When would we have to define load environment and skirt length and diameters to meet schedule?
o Are there alternative skirt designs that might minimize schedule?
Helium Tanks:
Lowest Cost (assumed seamless Al liner)
Desire 12 month delivery time
Total of seven (7) Tanks
Length of tank cylinder: 900mm (35.43”)
Tank head ellipse: optimize
Tank OD: 130mm (5.12”) for volume, can optimize.
Helium inlet line at center of one hemisphere: 1/4” OD
Inlet Line material: Stainless Steel
Gas: Helium
Tank RFI- Exhibit 1 to JPL Solicitation #YT-17-07 February 07, 2017
Gas Mass / Tank: 0.4 kg
Operating Pressure: 4500 psia
MEOP: 5000 psia
Burst safety factor: 4.0
Tank to structure Interface: helium tanks are assumed to have fore and aft boss (simple cylinder) that we would pick up with a tripod and bipod.
