Office: Southern Nevada District Office Notice of Funding Opportunity Number: L22AS00306 Project Submission Dates and Times: June 16, 2022, 5:00 p.m. (ET)
Project Title: Southern Nevada District Gold Butte NM Interpretive Youth Intern Maximum Available Funding in FY22: $27,000 Project Background Information: The Southern Nevada District Office has established the protection of Gold Butte’s Cultural Heritage as a priority project for the Gold Butte National Monument. Protection measures necessary are directed in the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA) Project BL85, Protecting Gold Butte’s Cultural Heritage. This project focuses on three cultural complexes in the Gold Butte area that are well known and receive heavy visitation by the public. The three complexes include: Whitney Pocket, an area currently designated as an ACEC containing one historic Civilian Conservation Corps camp and one prehistoric rock shelter and roasting pit site; Falling Man Rock Writing Complex; and Kirk’s Grotto Site Complex, a slot canyon containing a number of petroglyph panels.
The conditions at these sites are threatened by the impacts of recreational use, which has already resulted in damage to archaeological features. These complexes stand to suffer additional significant damage absent public education and interpretation and increased management of recreational traffic and visitation. Youth interns are an important component in the effort to protect and restore the value of these resources and values.
Involving youth interns in this project is important for developing careers in the BLM and helping the District accomplish priority resource protection, building lasting relationships with the community and Native Tribes. BLM specialists in recreation and natural resourcers will guide the interns in completing the work, as well as providing insights into resource management and career opportunities.
Project Objective:
The project promotes connectivity by linking people with nature and improving recreational opportunities at three cultural resource complexes through education, interpretation, and outreach while protecting cultural resources even with increased reacreation use. It will showcase the diverse cultural heritage through public outreach and educational elements including tribal participation, development of interpretive signs, youth initiatives and social media contenct development.
Interns will develop information and interpretive kiosks to for cultural resource complexes that aid in the connectivy of the Native American Heritage to the local community and visiting public. Utilizing tribal consultation and coordination with BLM, interpretive kiosks will provide a critical link between current and traditional uses of the lands they are designed to highlight. Kiosks will be designed and produced utilizing current available computer technology and resources, while identifying a means to ensure international understanding of the information provided.
