STATEMENT OF NEED

PURPOSE: Refrigerators and freezers for Hawaiian monk seal field camp

BACKGROUND:

Remote field camps are established in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands every summer to study the Hawaiian monk seal. Field sites are remote and have no permanent infrastructure so all supplies must be brought in. Refrigerators and freezers are needed for a variety of purposes including keeping human food cold, freezing of bait for fishing, and preserving vaccines for seals. Each field site is unique and has different capabilities for power supply. Some rely on solar power and some have the capability for propane powered equipment.
