SECTION 072100 - THERMAL INSULATION

Revise this Section by deleting and inserting text to meet Project-specific requirements.

Verify that Section titles referenced in this Section are correct for this Project's Specifications; Section titles may have changed.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

Retain or delete this article in all Sections of Project Manual.

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes:

1. Foam-plastic board insulation.

2. Under-slab blanket insulation

1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated.

1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Protect insulation materials from physical damage and from deterioration due to moisture, soiling, and other sources. Store inside and in a dry location. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions for handling, storing, and protecting during installation.

Retain paragraph below for foam-plastic board insulation.

B. Protect foam-plastic board insulation as follows:

1. Do not expose to sunlight except to necessary extent for period of installation and concealment.

2. Protect against ignition at all times. Do not deliver foam-plastic board materials to Project site before installation time.

3. Quickly complete installation and concealment of foam-plastic board insulation in each area of construction.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

Retain types of insulation required in insulation articles below. Coordinate selections with thicknesses and thermal resistances indicated on Drawings and with HVAC design and energy program.

Surface-burning indexes for products indicated in articles below are examples only; revise to suit Project. Where insulation is exposed to interior of building or to air spaces in plenums or similar voids, verify requirements for fire-test-response characteristics.

2.1 FOAM-PLASTIC BOARD INSULATION

Extruded-polystyrene board insulation in first three paragraphs below is also called "XPS insulation."

A. Extruded-Polystyrene Board Insulation: ASTM C 578, of type and minimum compressive strength indicated below, with maximum flame-spread and smoke-developed indexes of 75 and 450, respectively, per ASTM E 84.

See Editing Instruction No. 1 in the Evaluations for cautions about naming manufacturers. Retain first subparagraph and list of manufacturers below. See Section 016000 "Product Requirements."

1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following:

a. DiversiFoam Products.

b. Dow Chemical Company (The).

c. Owens Corning.

d. Pactiv Building Products.

e. Or approved equal.

Retain one or more of five subparagraphs below. If retaining more than one, indicate location of each on Drawings or by inserts.

2. Type IV, 25 psi (173 kPa).

3. Type V, 100 psi (690 kPa).

2.2 UNDER-SLAB BLANKET INSULATION

Extruded-polystyrene board insulation in first three paragraphs below is also called "XPS insulation."

A. Under-Slab Blanket Insulation: An under-slab insulation and vapor barrier designed to provide a thermal break and moisture barrier between the slab and grade..

See Editing Instruction No. 1 in the Evaluations for cautions about naming manufacturers. Retain first subparagraph and list of manufacturers below. See Section 016000 "Product Requirements."

1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following:

a. Insul-Tarp.

b. Or approved equal.

Retain one or more of five subparagraphs below. If retaining more than one, indicate location of each on Drawings or by inserts.

2. Weight per 150 sf: 12.5 lbs.

3. Tensile Strength and Elongation (Bubble Pack): ASTM D 412-98, 136 psi.

4. Tensile Strength (Cross Woven Polyethylene): ASTM D 751 (Grab), 45 lbf/in..

5. Compression Set: ASTM D 3575-00, 4.3 percent.

6. Bursting Strength (Bubble Pack): ASTM D 751-00 (Ball Burst), 95.1 lbf.

7. Tear Strength (Cross Woven Polyethylene): ASTM D 1922 (Tongue Tear), 28 lbs (Warp).

8. Water Vapor Permeance: ASTM E 96, .002 perms, Class A.

First two paragraphs below describe products intended for below-grade applications. Retain if required for Project and not specified in other Sections.

Molded-polystyrene board insulation in first paragraph below is also called "expanded-polystyrene (EPS)" or "beadboard."

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION, GENERAL

A. Comply with insulation manufacturer's written instructions applicable to products and applications indicated.

B. Install insulation that is undamaged, dry, and unsoiled and that has not been left exposed to ice, rain, or snow at any time.

C. Provide sizes to fit applications indicated and selected from manufacturer's standard thicknesses, widths, and lengths. Apply single layer of insulation units to produce thickness indicated unless multiple layers are otherwise shown or required to make up total thickness.

3.2 INSTALLATION OF BELOW-GRADE INSULATION

Retain first option in first paragraph below if support is required during backfilling.

A. On vertical surfaces, set insulation units loosely laid according to manufacturer's written instructions.

B. On horizontal surfaces, loosely lay insulation units according to manufacturer's written instructions. Stagger end joints and tightly abut insulation units.

Insert specific protection requirements here.

3.3 INSULATION SCHEDULE

Retain this article or, for projects with more than one of each type of insulation, copy paragraphs and create an additional set of requirements and products for each variation. As an alternative, create a tabular schedule on Drawings and use numbered insulation types rather than descriptions of insulation products.

A. Insulation Type 1: Type IV extruded-polystyrene board insulation. At all vertical locations.

1. Basis of Design: Dow Chemical Company (The), Styrofoam Brand “Scoreboard.”

B. Insulation Type 2: Type V extruded-polystyrene board insulation. At all horizontal locations in the Garage area.

1. Basis of Design: Dow Chemical Company (The), Styrofoam “Highload 100.”

C. Insulation Type 3: Under-slab insulation. At all horizontal locations in the Garage area.

1. Basis of Design: Insul-Tarp.
