About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file for a Fiber Laser Cutter solicitation by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Engineering Research and Development Center-Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (ERDC-CERL). The Q&A addresses technical specifications for the laser cutter, including work area dimensions, power requirements, and material cutting capabilities. Key details include a required work area of at least 59" in length and 118" in width, electrical power limited to 220V Single Phase-40A and 220V 3-Phase-30A circuits, and material cutting thicknesses of Aluminum (5/16"), Carbon Steel (1"), and Stainless Steel (1/2"). The solicitation seeks a precision metal laser-cutting equipment with safety equipment and training, to be submitted via email to CERL-CT-Quotes@usace.army.mil, with no telephone responses accepted.

Laser Cutter Q&A
Question 1: Please confirm table size 4'x8' or 5'x10'?
Answer 1: The requirement we put forth for the work area is (1.5m or greater work-area length) and (3.0m or greater work-area width). This is roughly >= 4.92ft x >= 9.84ft in imperial units.
Question 2: The specifications indicate that electrical power requirements do not exceed 220V Single Phase -40A and 220V 3-Phase - 30A circuits.
1. The 3kw Fiber laser source that we have access to, that meets Section 889 of the National Defense Authorization Act, requires 480v 3-phase power. Will you require that the vendor meet both the 889 and the solicitation power requirements (including documentation on what laser sources and communication devices they are using) or is there the possibility of changing the power requirement to 480v 3phase?
Answer 2: Our laboratory space does not have the ability to support 480v 3phase, so this requirement cannot be changed.” We have no funds available to change/install different power outlets in the location this item will be placed.
Question 3: The specifications indicate that the system cuts the following materials at their listed thicknesses: Aluminum: Equal to or greater 5/16", Carbon Steel: Equal to or greater 7/8", and Stainless Steel: Equal to or greater 3/8".
1. Our technical experts recommend that with a 3kw laser, any thicknesses above the following, Aluminum 1/4", Carbon Steel 1/2", and Stainless Steel 1/4", that the specific materials be tested (application testing) prior to purchase to guarantee acceptability of results. What will be the maximum thickness of these three materials that will be cut and would you be requiring the vendor to perform application testing?
Answer 3: The maximum thickness of material are anticipated to be the following: Aluminum (5/16”), Carbon Steel (1”), Stainless Steel (1/2”). No requirement for the vendor to perform application testing.
Question 4: Would a working area of 52"x 100" (LxW) be adequate for this equipment?
Answer 4: The work area must be 1.5m (59”) or greater in length and 3.0m (118”) or greater in width.
