The government will provide the new strut pin for the connection to be used when installing the sector arms to the sector gear. Contractor must use a spacer between the two arms to get the distance of the strut arm correct when installing the arms. After bolts are installed, wedges will be installed between the sector gear casting slot and sector gear arms. Contractor must make sure to secure these wedges tightly.

6.3. Sector Gear Bushings. Contractor will supply all materials and labor to furnish 8 ea. Sector Gear Bushings. The sector gear bushings are to be made from C95400 Aluminum Bronze. The pin diameter will be supplied by technical representative to give the contractor the dimension for the Inner Diameter of the bushing. The approximate diameter is 12-1/2”. Two (2) sector gear bushings are installed in each sector gear.

6.4. Sector Gear Thrust Washers. Contractor will supply all materials and labor to furnish 8 ea. Sector Gear Thrust Washers. The sector gear thrust washers are to be made from C95400 Aluminum Bronze.

Minor surface imperfections not affecting the strength of castings may be welded in the “green” if approved by the inspector. Surface imperfections shall be considered minor when the depth of the cavity prepared for welding is not greater than 20 percent of the actual wall thickness, but in no case greater than 1 inch. Defects other than minor surface imperfections may be welded only when specifically authorized in accordance with the following requirements:

(1) The defects have been entirely removed and are judged not to affect the strength, use, or machinability of the castings when properly welded and stress relieved.

(2) The proposed welding procedure, stress relieving and method of examination of the repair work have been submitted and approved.

8. METAL WORK FABRICATION

8.1. General. Material must be straight before being laid off or worked. If straightening is necessary, it shall be done by methods that will not injure the metal. Sharp kinks or bends shall be cause for rejection of the material. Material with welds will not be accepted, except where otherwise approved.

Where heating is required, precautions shall be taken to avoid overheating the metal, and it shall be allowed to cool in such a manner as not to destroy the original properties of the metal. Finished members shall be free from twists, bends and open joints.

8.2. Dimensional Tolerances of Structural Steel Items.

8.2.1. Dimensions shall be measured by means of an approved calibrated steel tape of the same temperature as the item or part at the time of measurement.

8.2.2. The overall dimensions of the assembled structural unit shall be within the tolerances indicated on the drawings or as required for proper assembly.

8.2.3. Except as required to meet the requirements above, an allowable variation of 1/32 inch is permissible in the overall length of individual component members with both ends milled and individual component members without milled ends shall not deviate from the dimensions shown on the drawings by more than 1/16 inch.

9. MACHINE WORK

9.1. General. Unless otherwise shown on the drawings, all tolerances, allowances and gages for metal fits between plain, non-threaded cylindrical parts shall conform to ANSI B4.1-94, “Preferred Limits and Fits for Cylindrical Parts”, for the class of fit as shown or otherwise required. Where fits are not shown, they shall be suitable as determined by the Contracting Officer. Machine work shall be done wherever an “f” or other symbol denoting surface finish appears on the drawings, and at other places, where necessary. Tolerances for machine-finished surfaces designated by non-decimal dimensions shall be within 1/64 inch. Sufficient machining stock shall be allowed on placing pads to insure true surfaces of solid material. Finished contact or bearing surfaces shall be true and exact to secure full contact. All surfaces shall be finished with sufficient smoothness and accuracy to insure proper operation when assembled.

9.2. Finished Surfaces

9.2.1. Where surface finishes are indicated on the drawings or specified herein, the symbols used or finishes specified shall be in accordance with ANSI B46.1-95. “Surface Texture (Surface Roughness, Waviness, and Lay).” Values of roughness height specified are arithmetical average deviation expressed in micro inches. Roughness specified is the maximum value and any lesser will be satisfactory unless otherwise called for on the drawings. Compliance with specified surface shall be determined by sense of feel and by visual inspection of the work compared to Roughness Comparison Specimens, in accordance with the provisions of ANSI B46.1. Values of roughness width and waviness height are not specified, but shall be consistent with the general type of finish specified by roughness height. Flaws such as scratches, ridges, holes, peaks, cracks, or checks which will make the part unsuitable for the intended use will be cause for rejection.

9.2.2. Where the finish is not indicated or specified, the type of finish shall be that which is most suitable for the surface to which it applies and shall be consistent with the class of fit required. Surfaces to be machine finished shall be indicated on the drawings by symbols, which conform to ANSI B46.1

9.3. Unfinished Surfaces. So far as practical, all work shall be laid out to secure proper matching of adjoining surfaces. Where there is a large discrepancy between adjoining unfinished surfaces, they shall be ground free of all projections and rough spots. Depressions or holes not affecting the strength and usefulness of the parts shall be filled in a manner approved by the Contracting Officer.

9.4. Assemble Sector Gears. Existing bushings and sector arms shall be removed. The existing sector arms are property of the Government and shall be returned to the Government. Gears shall to be sand blasted and inspected for cracks. The sector gears are assumed to currently be painted with lead based paint. All requirements in Section 11.1.1 Lead Paint Removal must be followed. The sector gears shall be non-destructively tested as appropriate to check for any existing defects or damage.

Any damage shall be reported to the Contracting Officer for guidance on repair. Any damage or cracks found shall be identified and the Technical Representative notified. Prior to any repair work, a modification of the contract shall be approved by the Contracting Representative. The new sector gear bushings will be fit into the sector gears according to the attached drawings.

9.5. Sector Arms. The sector arms’ turned bolt holes shall be reamed to the sector gear hole dimension.

The government shall supply body-bound mounting bolts, nuts, and washers to attach the sector arms.

10. SHOP ASSEMBLY. Sector arms shall be fitted to sector gears. The tolerances shall not exceed those shown on the drawings and each unit assembled shall be closely checked to insure that all necessary clearances have been provided and that binding does not occur in any moving part. The assemblies will be painted according to section 11.1 Painting. Assembly in the shop shall be in the same position as final installation in the field.

The price of the wedges (OC-240.1/5-1A) shall be included in the price for assembling the sector arms. Final assembly and disassembly work shall be performed in the presence of a Government inspector, unless waived in writing by the Contracting Officer, and the Contractor shall immediately remedy any errors or defects disclosed, without cost to the Government. The sector arms and sector gear shall be fitted and shipped together as a unit. The end date of the contract is critical.

11. PAINTING AND PROTECTION OF FINISHED WORK.

The lead-based paint shall be completely removed from all parts of each gear. It is the responsibility of the Contractor to comply with all Federal, State and Local regulations regarding the removal and disposal of the lead paint. This includes the OSHA regulations outlined in 29 CFR 1926.62.

11.1.2 Painting and Surface Preparation. All exposed exterior surfaces of assemblies and equipment except threaded and bearing surfaces shall be shop primed with an rust-inhibitive alkyd primer (2 mils DFT) and finished with two coats (1.5 mils each coat) of an approved aluminum paint equivalent to Federal Specification TT-P-38 paint. Surface preparation shall be solvent cleaning, SP-1, power tool, SP-3 or brush-off blast cleaning, SP-7, and commercial blast cleaning, SP-6. As much as practical, the coating system shall be applied to individual components and items before assembly to ensure complete coverage and maximum protection against corrosion. Both the primer and finish paints shall be approved prior to use and the manufacturer’s literature shall be sent to the COR for approval.

11.2 Protection of Finished Work. Machine-finished surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned of foreign matter. All finished surfaces shall be coated with Cosmoline or protected by other suitable means.
