FIELD REPORT

5.50

The undersigned arrived on site, as requested, to perform a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scan of the concrete areas at lock and dams 2 and 3. The purpose of these activities was to determine if the soils beneath the concrete appeared to be stable.

Utilizing a GSSI SIR3000 with a 400 MHz antenna the areas were scanned. A grid pattern was set and runs were made parallel to each other. At the time of our services, the ground was dry at lock 2 and there was standing water on some of the areas at lock 3.

The area at lock 3 was scanned and there were 2 locations that showed anomalies indicative of loose soils. Please see the attached sketch for the approximate areas. The north end had some east/west cracking in the concrete. This along with the anomalies observed indicate some minor settlement in the soils at this time. The south end area in question had a majority of the area under water. It was also visible that the concrete had settled several inches. There appears to be significant settlement of the soils in this area. We recommend performing geotechnical borings in this area to determine how loose these soils are and determining a plan to stabilize the concrete.

The area at lock 2 was scanned and we did not observe any anomalies indicative of soft soils.

The concrete also appeared to be stable with minimal cracking and no visible signs of settlement.
